Mustangs ninth in Calhoun Men’s Golf Spring Classic after first two rounds
NACC carries momentum into today’s third and final round after 16-shot second-round improvement
A second-round surge keyed a strong opening day for the Northeast Alabama men's golf team at its final tournament of the regular season.
NACC is in ninth place after the first two rounds of the Calhoun Men's Golf Spring Classic.
The tournament began Monday and concludes today at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur.
The Mustangs posted a two-round team score of 34-over par and sit just four shots back of eighth-place Southern Union heading into today's third and final round. NACC was particularly strong in Round 2, shooting a team score of 9-over par, a 16-shot improvement from Round 1.
"The guys played really well in Round 2," said NACC head coach Jabo Moore. "We focused more on keeping the big numbers off the scorecard compared to our past tournaments. We are trying to simplify the game to get back to scoring better as a whole."
Braden Holt led the NACC effort on Day 1, tying for 19th place at 5-over par 149. The freshman shot a 2-over par 74 in Round 1 and a 3-over 75 in Round 2. He had three birdies in Round 1 and four more in Round 2.
Ethan Roberts is tied for 32nd place for the Mustangs entering Round 3 after shooting a two-round 9-over par 153. The sophomore carded a 7-over par 79 in Round 1 before improving by five shots in Round 2, shooting a 2-over par 74 in a round that included three birdies.
Reed Potter had the biggest round-to-round jump among NACC golfers. After a tough opening round that saw the sophomore shoot a 13-over par 85, Potter rebounded in a big way in Round 2, carding a 1-under par 71 while posting five birdies and an eagle on the Par-5 second hole. He climbed 24 spots in the individual standings in Round 2 and is tied for 40th entering the final round.
Greyson Widgeon is tied for 45th place entering the final round. The sophomore climbed seven spots in the standings after improving four strokes in Round 2. Widgeon shot a 9-over par 81 in an opening round that included three birdies before carding a 5-over par 77 in a second round that featured two birdies and an eagle on the Par-5 16th hole.
Reece McClintock is tied for 49th after two rounds. The freshman shot a 7-over par 79 in Round 1 and an 8-over 80 in Round 2.
