The Northeast Alabama Community College softball team finished its non-conference schedule with a 19-1 record after splitting a doubleheader with visiting Roane State Thursday at Nathaniel Ledbetter Stadium.
The Mustangs won the opener 4-1 to extend their program-best 19-0 start before some last at-bat heroics by Roane State helped it end NACC's record-setting win streak.
The Mustangs overcame a one-run deficit to win Thursday's first game. Roane State took the lead in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, but the Mustangs quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on sophomore Francesca Lumpp's solo homer. Freshman Austin McNeece followed with a single, and pinch runner sophomore Audra "Pearl" Bellomy moved to second base after sophomore Emmorie Burke's sacrifice bunt. After freshman Morgan Perkins singled and sophomore Emma Hindmon walked to load the bases, Bellomy scored on freshman Lorelai Sullivan's RBI sacrifice fly to give NACC a 2-1 lead. The Mustangs added a run in the fifth when freshman Marti McCluskey singled and later scored on McNeece's RBI sacrifice fly. NACC manufactured another run in the sixth when Perkins led off the inning with a walk, went to second base on Hindmon's sacrifice bunt and scored on Sullivan's RBI double.
Lumpp finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Sullivan was 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Mustangs while McCluskey, McNeece, Perkins, Hindmon and sophomore Chloe Hatch had one hit each.
The Mustangs got another stellar outing from pitcher Addie Edwards, who earned her Alabama Community College Conference Division I-leading 10th win. The freshman right-hander allowed only one run on four hits and one walk while recording four strikeouts.
In Game 2, NACC fell behind 5-1 before rallying to carry a 6-5 lead into the top of the seventh. But two solo home runs for Roane State ultimately gave it a 7-6 win.
Sullivan again went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Mustangs, finishing with a double and a triple. Lummp and freshman Olivia Acuff both doubled and drove in a run while finishing 2-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively for NACC, and Burke added two hits and a walk. The Mustangs also got one hit each from McCluskey and Perkins and one RBI from sophomore Kiley Weston.
NACC and Roane State were scheduled to meet again in a doubleheader Saturday at RSCC, but those games were rained out.
The games with Roane State were NACC's final non-conference games.
NACC begins Alabama Community College Conference play next week with a four-game series with Calhoun. The Mustangs visit Calhoun for a doubleheader Thursday starting at 1 p.m. before hosting the Warhawks for two games on Saturday, March 14 (1 p.m.).
