Newly-ranked Mustangs stay undefeated by sweeping Volunteer State
NACC batters hit four home runs during doubleheader sweep
The Northeast Alabama Community College softball team kept the scoreboard operator busy during its doubleheader sweep of Volunteer State (Tennessee) Community College.
The Mustangs combined for 22 runs and 23 hits to remain undefeated during a pair of 12-2, 10-0 mercy-rule shortened five-inning victories Tuesday.
NACC, ranked No. 4 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Softball Rankings, improved its record to 16-0 with the sweep.
The Mustangs, who currently have a .424. team batting average, have outscored opponents 137-33 this season.
Trailing 2-0 after one inning of Game 1 against Volunteer State, NACC countered with four runs in the top of the second before adding three in the third, two in the fourth and three in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule. NACC finished with 13 hits and six walks while eight different Mustangs recorded a hit.
NACC freshman Lorelai Sullivan singled, walked and hit a three-run home run — her third of the season — while going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The Mustangs also got a 2-for-3, three-RBI effort from sophomore Kiley Weston, a 2-for-2, two-RBI and two-runs scored performance from sophomore Chloe Hatch and a 2-for-3, two-RBI outing from freshman Emmorie Burke.
Sophomore Emma Hindmon and freshman Morgan Perkins finished with two hits each for the Mustangs while freshman Marti McCluskey had an RBI double and freshman Olivia Acuff had a double. Hatch, Weston, Burke, McCluskey and sophomore Sophia Murphey each drew a walk.
Addie Edwards pitched a complete game for the Mustangs. The freshman earned her Alabama Community College Conference leading eighth win of the season after allowing just two runs on four hits while recording five strikeouts over five innings pitched.
NACC took control of Game 2 by hitting three home runs in the third inning.
The Mustangs moved in front 1-0 in the top of the second inning when sophomore pinch runner Audra "Pearl" Bellomy scored a run on Savannah Cantrell's RBI single. In the third inning, McCluskey's team-leading sixth homer run, a two-run shot, gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead, and following a walk by freshman Austin McNeece, Hindmon hit a two-run homer to left field. Two pitches later, Perkins hit her first collegiate home run to push the Mustangs' advantage to 6-0. NACC added three more runs in a fourth inning highlighted by Burke's RBI double before stretching the lead to 10-0 in the fifth on Murphey's RBI sacrifice fly.
Burke and Sullivan finished 2-for-3 for the Mustangs while Weston, McCluskey, Perkins, Cantrell and freshman Breanna Wilson had one hit each. McNeece walked twice while Weston and McCluskey scored two runs each.
Erin Harrelson pitched a four-hit shutout for NACC to earn her second win in the circle. The freshman allowed four hits and did not issue a walk while recording four strikeouts.
NACC is off this weekend before returning to action with a doubleheader at Georgia Highlands Wednesday starting at noon. The Mustangs host a doubleheader with Roane State (Tennessee) Community College at Nathaniel Ledbetter Stadium the following day (1 p.m.) before playing two games at Roane State starting at noon on Saturday, March 7.
